Rhyme and Reason to Glass Recycling
from:Glass recycling is one of the most necessary types of recycling around. Landfills are filled is glasses, bottles, light bulbs, jars, and other forms of glass. Glass makes up a large amount of landfills because it is so high in density. By recycling glass instead of throwing it away, glass is kept out of landfills and doesn’t pollute the environment by helping to fill garbage dump sites, or by creating litter. It doesn’t take long to rinse a glass container and put it into a separate bin for glass recycling, so it would be ideal for this to be done in every home, and even brought into local businesses. The effort is quite minimal and the affects on the environment are quite substantial.
Glass recycling does not just help by keeping old glass out of the dumps. The process of making glass from sand and other products is quite tolling on the environment as well. Huge amounts of carbon dioxide pollute the air just to make glass. This is drastically reduced by producing new glass products out of cullet, or broken down and crushed recycled glass. Thus, glass recycling helps the environment in two ways – it helps to prevent carbon dioxide pollution by decreasing the need for new virgin glass, and helps by taking up less space for glass in landfills.
Globally, glass recycling is quite encouraged all around. Third world and developing nations often are forced to recycle glass bottles because the price of new glass bottles is to excessive. The recycling in this reference however is generally the washing and refilling of old bottles as opposed to the glass refinery sense of glass recycling. Canada and Denmark are two countries that have extremely high rates of recycling glass, which is primarily due to laws governing deposit fees. The United States has similar laws, and returning bottles there will yield money as well, and can be conveniently done in most supermarkets. Bottle banks, or drop sites, are also generally located near other recycling media such as plastic and can recycling banks, allowing one to take care of all their recycling needs simultaneously.
In addition to using recycled glass to create other glass products, glass recycling can be used in a number of other products as well. Ceramics, bricks, and Astroturf all use recycled glass as component of their production. Recycled glass can be used for water filtration and as an abrasive as well. Glass recycling is useful in many ways as well as being environmentally conscious. Whenever possible, individuals should make an effort to strive toward glass recycling instead of simply throwing away their discarded glass.
