Bottle Bills Help Recycling Rate for Glass in Australia

from:

The recycling rate for glass in Australia is gaining ground and their efforts are rivaling those of the United Kingdom. The recycling industry in Australia is growing. There is a recycling plant in Victoria that doesn't demand that the glass bottles and jars be separated by color, because the plant is fully automated to do the color sorting. Special cameras in the recycling facility does an optical scan of the recyclate and removes any foreign debris.

The citizens of Australia collect their glass in much the same way that everyone else does. Special directions may be given as to how the glass should be collected. The recycling rate for glass in Australia exceeds 120,000 tons per year. Bottle bills help the recycling rate for glass in Australia. Consumers in Southern Australia pay a 10 cent deposit on their beverage bottles and their money is refunded when they bring the bottles back for recycling. Not all municipalities in Australia have bottle bills, but people interested in starting a bottle bill can find information at: http://toolkit.bottlebill.org/.

Bottle bills that have been signed into law have greatly helped the recycling rate for glass in Australia, because paying the extra 10 cents a bottle is an incentive to recycle to get your money back. Just like everywhere, there will be people who are not interested in recycling; they might think it is a bother and just toss their glass bottles in the trash. The trouble with throwing bottles in the trash is that they end up in the landfills. Glass is inert, it doesn't hurt the environment per se; however, its inability to decompose back to its natural state of sand and other elements it clogs up the landfills. If people did not recycle their glass bottles and jars the countryside would be littered with glass, and the natural resources would take a huge hit.

The bottle bill, commonly known as the Container Deposit Legislation has helped the recycling rate for glass in Australia because it has reduced the amount of litter. The legislation has helped to educate the citizens of Australia on the importance of recycling. The recycling rate for glass in Australia has increased to more than 85 percent nationally since the law was implemented in 1975.

Still there will be people who do not recycle their glass beverage containers, and the 10 cents per bottle will be kept in a special fund where the funds grow over time to be used in the waste management systems. There are always repairs that need to be done to machinery and other needs, this money can be used like tax moneys to pay for the needs of the waste management systems of the municipalities. The bottle bill is a good tool to get more people to recycle.
