A Broad Look at Earth Ecology
from:We might think of the earth as the center of our universe, because we live here, but in actuality we are just a tiny speck in the universe. We are but a speck in the system that holds our earth in its orbit. Out of all of the solar systems with planets, our earth is the only planet we know of that is able to sustain life; this is the only place we have to live, and over time our earth is showing signs of becoming unhealthy. We don't have another planet we can fly off to if we destroy this one, so we have to be serious about sustaining the earth by employing the wisdom that the science of earth ecology has given us.
Earth ecology can be thought of in a broader scope than just the area in which you live. It is paramount to the land; ground water; lakes; rivers; seas; and oceans; polar ice caps, as well as the atmosphere. Our earth is mostly made of water; 317 cubic miles of ocean spans the earth. Surprisingly there are 2 million cubic miles of groundwater contained beneath our feet.
For decades upon decades we have been using the natural resources of our earth without thinking of what the consequences will be. Until recent years factories have dumped their wastes into the lakes and rivers. Smoke stacks from those factories have polluted the atmosphere causing acid rain to fall upon the earth. The science of earth ecology has taught us that we had to make changes in how we treat the earth. Because of global warming, related to greenhouse gas emissions, the polar ice caps are melting away at an alarming rate. The population of polar bears is decreasing because their habitat is disappearing. The planet warms up due to the carbon dioxide that is released into the air.
Now in recent years we have taken measures to correct the wrongs we have done in the past. We are employing the concepts of earth ecology to provide alternative energy sources to reduce the impact of pollution on the earth. Since the advent of the green movement power companies are offering clean energy that does not pollute the earth, which will reduce tons of greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere every day around the world.
Even if you don't purchase green power, you can still reduce pollution by taking some corrective measures around your home. Change your light bulbs to the energy efficient, long lasting compact florescent (CF) light bulbs. They last 10 times longer than conventional light bulbs. CF lighting is a great way to practice earth ecology because over the life of your light bulbs you are eliminating tons of pollution in the form of greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere.
The science of earth ecology teaches us that we are all connected on this planet. We all share the same earth, water and air. We have to take care of our little piece of the planet so it will be there for our grandchildren, and for all the generations that follow them.
